Carl J. Mitchell, 84, of Belvidere, IL passed away and joined his heavenly father on December 23, 2024 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Born on February 5, 1940, in McLeansboro, IL, to Andy and Thelma (Free) Mitchell. Carl graduated from Norris City Enfield High School in 1959. He left the family farm in Southern Illinois and made his way to Belvidere to work at Green Giant. He served in the Army from 1963 - 1965; serving one tour in Korea. He was employed with the National Grey Iron Foundry for 28 years and then at Camcar for 13 years when he retired. Carl lived a full life of fun and laughter. Through his first union, he has a daughter, DawnMarie, who he raised with so much love and affection. Wherever Carl went, he had Dawn right by his side. Carl was a hard worker and had a love for farming and animals, especially chickens. If he wasn't at work, you could find him outside by the barns! He made a lot of friends throughout the years and each one meant a lot to him. On December 22, 1990, Carl married Beverly Balk at the Church by the Side of the Road. They loved to be with each other, even if it was just one of their weekend drives to look at fall leaves. Their days together were full of laughter. Carl was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Dawn (Jason) Follis of Belvidere, grandchildren, Dylan Follis, Coral (Keegan Knox) Follis and Elijah Follis; great-grandson, Gideon Knox; sister, Lavanda Williams of Peoria; several nieces and nephews; stepdaughters, Cindy (James) Osenga of Janesville, WI and Cheryl (Robert) McDowall of Florida and their families. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, Beverly Mitchell and sister, Wanda Barnett.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 3, 2025 at Faith Baptist Church, Belvidere with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Weary of Faith Baptist Church officiating. Family would like to thank the staff at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center for their care and kind support. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
