It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of our mother,
Kathleen “Kathy” Mary Kuczynski, who left us on March 21, 2025. We
will miss her sense of humor, sassy stubbornness, and over-cooking
of various meats.
Our mom was born on July 13, 1955, the 9th of 11 living children, to
Barbara Wilke/Laufenberg/Ossmann and Joe Laufenberg. She grew
up on a chicken farm, but decided to focus on other life pursuits as an
adult. She raised three children: Becky, Abby, and Sam. In her late
30s into her 40s, she focused on learning the construction trade and
eventually owned her own small business, K.M. Rogers Construction.
She built houses all over the Poynette/Lodi/Lake Wisconsin area. She
also developed impressive biceps that made Arnold Schwarzenegger
envious.
She met the love of her life, Bobby Kuczynski, soon after leaving the
construction trade and moved to Illinois to live with him once her
children were all grown up. She became a big dog lover and owned
several rescue dogs over the years: Sid, Sparks, Lena, Katie, and
Vita. She and Bobby enjoyed camping, going to concerts, and quiet
moments together on their farm in rural Illinois. She spent a lot of time
reading as well, eventually becoming Stephen King’s #1 fan.
Her life further expanded as her family grew. She gained two sons-in-
law: Tom Lindsey, who married Becky, and Morgan Lowery, who
married Abby. Two grandchildren came along as well: Archer Lowery
and Eowyn Lowery. She enjoyed going on a northern Wisconsin/upper
Michigan vacation with them, babysitting them, giving them book
recommendations, and spoiling them with presents.
As a result of a decades-long effort from her son Sam, our mom grew
to love game shows as well, including Jeopardy and “Squeal of
Torture”.
After a frustrating and difficult fight against stage 4 lung cancer earlier
this year, she was relieved to leave the hospital (including its “nasty
food”) and spend the last few days of her life in hospice care at home.
Her husband and daughters helped her be as comfortable as possible.
She quietly took her last breath as the sun rose on Friday, March 21.
Soon after, a cardinal was seen out the window, as though her spirit
had finally taken flight.
Per her wishes, our mom was cremated. Her ashes were spread in
her garden, with some blown away by the wind. It was her hope to be
“one with the universe”. She wanted her spirit to be part of everything
from the dirt on the ground to the birds in the sky. With the sun coming
out just as her ashes were being scattered, it was a sign that her spirit
was finally at peace.
We will miss you and always remember you, Mom. Love you forever.
