Melvin (Mel) Glenn Shaver Jr., born on February 3, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December
13, 2024, in Sterling, Illinois with family by his side.
Growing up on a farm near Montour, Mel embraced a life of hard work, curiosity, and a relentless drive to leave the
world better than he found it. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University and later a master’s degree
from the University of Wisconsin–Stout. His deep passion for education led him to a 24-year career as a guidance
counselor and administrator at the Whiteside Area Vocational Center in Sterling, where he inspired countless
students to pursue their potential before retiring in 1993.
Never content to sit idle, Mel poured his energy into countless endeavors, from building and remodeling homes and
apartment complexes, to managing rental properties well in to his retirement years. Alongside his wife, Judith (Judi),
he cultivated The Beary Patch, their cherished strawberry farm. The farm became not only a labor of love but a
gathering place for the community—a testament to Melvin’s ability to transform any project into something
meaningful.
Mel was, in every sense, a man of remarkable character and passion. His interests were as vast as they were deep,
ranging from his love of reading and engaging in thoughtful conversations to his fascination with World War II history
and aviation. Whether exploring new ideas or sharing stories with family and friends, Melvin’s vibrant spirit and
inquisitive mind left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him.
Mel shared 66 extraordinary years of marriage with his beloved wife, Judi of Garwin, Iowa. Together, they built a
legacy of love and family that includes their three children: Tony (Tami) Shaver, Tammy (Steve) Benner, and Todd
(Sue) Shaver. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren who all brought him
great joy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Shaver Sr. and Frances Shaver. He is lovingly remembered by his
siblings, Marilyn (Alan) Sutton and Darrel (Roselyn) Shaver, and a wide circle of extended family and cherished
friends.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the compassionate staff at Morningside of Sterling and VITAS Hospice
Healthcare, whose care and kindness provided comfort and peace to Mel in his final months.
No services are planned at this time. A celebration of life event will take place in his honor in 2025.
Mel’s extraordinary life serves as a reminder to pursue our passions, embrace each moment, and share generously
with those around us. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
