Michael Fortner Obituary

Michael Fortner, 65, passed away on July 29, 2025, in Rockford, Illinois.

Born on February 8, 1960 in Muscoda Wisconsin, Michael was a lifelong learner who graduated from Riverdale High School and continued his education at Rock Valley College. He was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life road trips, visits to casinos, and especially playing blackjack. One of his favorite destinations was the boat in Dubuque, Iowa, where he enjoyed many memorable moments and driving out west to see everything out that way. 

Michael had a deep love for his family. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Jacobs; grandsons Caeleb Johnson and Noah Crandall; brother Mark Fortner; cousins Carrie Weeden and Alan Whale; and many extended family members in the South around Virginia. His beloved dogs were also an important part of his life. As his latest love for dogs was Dishrag. 2 urns of his other pooches. 

He was preceded in death by his mother Nelda June (1930-1981), father Jack Arnold (1921-1989), and longtime girlfriend of 27 years, Patrica Smith (predeceased 2021).

Michael was a member of Victory Baptist Church and recently traveled to Davenport, Iowa and other place that brought him happiness. Known for his humor and affection for those close to him, he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

A time of remembrance will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Victory Baptist Church 7028 Rydberg Road, Rockford, IL 61109 from 2pm-4pm. 

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved him.
